On April 28th the YMCA of Central New Mexico celebrated Healthy Kids at the Horn Family YMCA. Healthy Kids Day is a national initiative of the Y to improve the health and well-being of kids. More than 1,900 Ys across the country took part in the celebration with free community events for families, meant to kick start physical activity and learning throughout the summer.

We would like to thank all our Y members and members of the community who joined us on Saturday! We would also like to thank all the Y staff and other organizations who took part in the event; without them we could not have pulled off such a wonderful community event. We look forward to celebrating Healthy Kids Day again next year!

Click the video below to see all the excitement from this year’s event!

Volunteer Work Day a Success!

Knowing the need for repairs to the seasonal pool, Carrie Ann Drinville, Associate Executive Director of the McLeod Mountainside YMCA called upon members and staff to live the mission of the Y. Saturday, April 21, 2012 was Volunteer Work Day and dozens of people turned out to lend a hand for the Y. “The YMCA is so much more than a gym” says Drinville “we believe in the mission and the three causes” The YMCA has as its core, in addition to the mission the three causes, youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. “Giving my time on a Saturday morning allows me to give back to the Y and in turn to our community” says Doug Bolling, Chairman of the McLeod Board of Directors. “We have a lot of work to do to get this pool ready for opening on May 19th and having all these folks come help is great.” Drinville is overheard saying. Long term members, children of staff, new members, staff from other branches, even a member visiting from Johnson County Family YMCA in Buffalo, Wyoming stopped by to help remove the cracked plaster from the pool bottom. W had families working side by side showing off their muscles as they chopped, lifted and chucked that old plaster.

Those volunteers who didn’t want to get into that heavy lifting scraped paint from the weathered block walls then slathered it with a fresh coat of paint. Even those members who preferred staying indoors had a task to do taping and painting the whitewalls of the MPR. As you enter the facility this week, please notice the newly planted flowers in our pots, again a task completed by a volunteer. This summer as you enjoy the beauty of McLeod’s seasonal pool be sure to thank a volunteer as you munch on a bean you harvested from our community garden. Oh, did I mention the volunteers planted most of the garden also?

Thank you to our many volunteers! Without you we would be high and dry.
